Day 85-91 Goodbye America

Posted by jack On August - 24 - 2009

I’m sorry for taking so long for this update! My days have been very full and the Spanish sun inspires many siestas.

Day 86

Greenville, NY to Monroe, NY

Now that I have arrived in the state of New York it seems my bike feels as though it has completed it’s task. While crossing a street in Monroe, NY today there was a loud snap from my rear hub and my cassette ceased to free-spin. While pulling into the nearest parking lot my chain wadded itself up into my derailleur.

Day 81

C&O Trail to Mercersburg, PA

Today was beautiful. Riding north along the highway to New York after a week of rest in the woods was like being born again. I had forgotten of my love affair with the open road. The sun on my face, wind in my hair, and the miles rolling by beneath my wheels as I pedaled my life to a new town and a new state. It was ecstasy in it’s purest and simplest form. Day 71

Leesburg, VA to the C&O Trail

I spent the previous night in a harvested hay field just a few miles west of Leesburg. My tent pitched beside a huge stack of hay bails safe from the prying eyes of any passers by. Day 66

White Sulfur Springs to The Wilds of West Virginia

Kate and I passed the time with idle conversation as we rode north into the Monongahela National Forest. The frequency of passing through towns trickled down to once an hour at best. Plodding along, still in awe and thankfulness at the hospitality of the people we were lucky enough to meet thus far, we were about to see that our luck had to expire. Read the rest of this entry »

Day 61

Mountain Top Removal Charleston, WV

Today we were all to meet in town and get rides from volunteers up to a MTR(mountain top removal) site. I slept in thinking the meeting time was an hour later than it actually was. Luckily for me one of the volunteer drivers was behind schedule so Kevin was still in town waiting for his ride.

Day 56

Dayton to Columbus

While I was asleep, Emily exacted her revenge for the toad at Fletcher Lake. She turned my bike into a birthday party. I liked it, so I rode it all day that way. Read the rest of this entry »
