I can’t even hope to even partially construe how incredible the experiences I have had over the last four days have been for me. Sooooooo much has happened each day that it has seemed like years have past since I began this trip. Read the rest of this entry »

Day One

Posted by jack On May - 19 - 2009

Day one went without any mechanical failures. It was a beautiful day for riding. The sun was on our faces and the wind at our backs. It wasn’t too hot nor was it cold. Our official start was Gas Works Park, from there we took the Burke Gilman Trail east and north. Read the rest of this entry »

Meeting the Crew

Posted by jack On May - 18 - 2009

Tonight I am sleeping at JP Kemmick’s (founder of the Trek) apartment. All of the people that I am traveling the US with are here, asleep while I excitedly pound away at the keys on my notebook. I don’t think I will get any sleep tonight…

I spent the earlier part of the day saying a long goodbye to my close family and getting the rest of my things together. Perhaps a little to long as it was knocking 8 pm before I was able to leave.

From the window of a dusty pickup I waved goodbye to my family with tears in my eyes, and a knot in my throat. A forlorn ending to a beautiful chapter in my life, but I despair not. I am excited for their future as I am mine, for I know it holds treasures unknown for us all.

Jp’s living room was strewn with gear and preoccupied bikers sorting through their stuff preparing for the big departure the following morning. Everyone seems really cool so far, and I can’t wait to get to know them better.

Alright, I’m going to go pretend to sleep now.

P.S. – JP has nick-nacks.

    A Celebration!

    Posted by jack On May - 13 - 2009

I went in to the orthopedist yesterday and found out that I do not need surgery. Thankfully the injury was less severe than I was fearing! The doctor told me that I had sustained micro tearing of the Medial Collateral Ligament. Read the rest of this entry »

    Limbo

    Posted by jack On May - 10 - 2009

I have decided to postpone all other activities related to my trip until I have spoken with an orthopedist. I fear that my entire journey may be jeopardized by this injury, so I think that the most logical step is to get a professional opinion and go from there.

At this point I am having difficulty being optimistic so I am planning for the worst. Not knowing is the worst part about all this. The next two to three years of my life are in a state of limbo waiting on an unknown variable. First thing monday morning I am calling an orthopedist and scheduling an appointment.

If anyone knows of a good orthopedist in the Seattle area feel more than free to send me an email and I’ll check them out.

Gazing into the Face of Failure

    Posted by jack On May - 9 - 2009

I just can’t believe it. Why now? Why when I am so close to my attaining dream does it all seem as though it’s going to come crashing down? After all the preparation, planning, and hard work. Perhaps it was all just a dream after all…

I thought I had planned everything correctly and covered all the bases. Now within the last few weeks before my departure date is here a potentially serious knee problem has surfaced.

The last few bike rides I have done were accompanied by a very discomforting pain in the interior of my right knee. In the past I had had intermittent knee pains that were never more than a minor annoyance and so I mostly ignored them. But now within the last few weeks they have been growing more painful and occurring at progressively lower milages.

I have since taken my bike to a professional trainer and he has identified and corrected the problem with my bike that has affected my knee. However I fear that I may have permanently damaged the cartilage. At this point I just want to see a doctor and get some sort of confirmation on the status of my knee, but I have no doctor or insurance.

So far it has been 5 days since I have last ridden my bike and it still does not feel quite up to par. I just don’t know, if since my bike is adjusted correctly now, whether my knee can handle cycling across the continent…

    I just can’t believe this is…

    Rock to Re-Energize

    Posted by jack On May - 3 - 2009

Well I owe thanks to many people for their help with this project. Michael Gee from Thank You Darling was really a big help and without him it wouldn’t have been half of what it was. Hillary was also a big help in a lot of ways. The bands were just super rad. All the guys were really nice, great musicians, and really genuine. It was such a great night!
