Big Agnes Seedhouse 2
I wanted something that was reasonably priced, light weight, durable, easy to set up, functional, and had enough room for me and my panniers.
Weighing in at 4 lbs 6 ounces all packed up in it’s stuff sack it adds little more weight than a few pairs of pants. It is freestanding meaning you don’t need stakes to set it up(however you do need them to setup the vestibule). Them main body is mesh and has a fast fly cover. This two walled setup allows condensation to run off the fly and onto the ground instead into your sleeping bag like with single walled tents. It has a 38″ ceiling and the floor measures 84″x52″
It’s made of 40D and 70D rip-stop nylon making it water proof and tough. While it does seem durable in respect to how thin the material is, there is a certain amount of care that must be excersized so as not to damage it. The floor is made of thicker urethane coated nylon but I am afraid that a stick or sharp rock could poke through without too much encouragement. Big Agnes sells a “foot print” separately for this tent to protect the floor from pokies, however alternatively you can get a piece of Tyvek house wrap cut to size and use that to save money and reduce weight. Tyvek is paper a like material. It is extremely tough, light weight, and is a good water barrier. It is used in many industrial and private applications.
It has a single pole/hub design comprised of light weight flexible aluminum tubing and two hubs making setup quite simple. For storage it has 8 sq ft of vestibule space at the entrance. Although sleeps two comfortably and I will be traveling alone most of the time, I wanted a two person tent to give me the option of storing the rest of my gear in the tent with me at night. Just as a theft prevention measure.
While there are other much more expensive tents out there that are lighter or more durable this one can be purchased for about $160 making this tent a great value.
So far I am very pleased with it and it seems like it will work out great.
