The Route

Posted by jack On March - 21 - 2009

It is fatal to know too much at the outset: boredom comes as quickly to the traveler who knows his route as to the novelist who is over certain of his plot. -Paul Theroux

To stay true to the vagabonding spirit I am following the advice of the quote above. Much of my trip is unplanned. As of right now once I go through Italy I only have no more than a general direction and few details worked out. Going with the flow and trusting my instincts will be the key factors in choosing routes and many of the destinations. However my journey across the American continent is more or less planned out as I am riding with a wonderful group of cyclists that are riding to make a difference on our warming climate and failing economy.

On May 16th I am going to be starting out on the western most part of Washington, Cape Flattery on the Olympic Peninsula. From there I will ride east to join up with the Trek to Re-Energize America in downtown Seattle (Due to a minor knee injury I will regrettably have to cancel this leg of my trip and begin in Seattle with the Trek). We will ride along the northern part of America to Washington DC. My reasons for riding with the Trek are intrinsic to my decision to use a bicycle as the primary means of transportation for my journey across the Earth.

Update 06/06/10

The only thing about my route that has remained the same since originally planing it was my statement that I will probably change it many times, and indeed I have. After arriving in Spain to discover that the border between Morocco and Algeria has been closed for years now I have pretty much completely abandon the original plan.

France which was never on my original itinerary has served as my home for close to 4 months now. After which Belgium and Sweden this August are the only set destinations I have, with a wish to be in India by Nov. Below I have constructed a map of where I have been so far.
